Jennetta Quinn-Bates is a Barkindji Malyangapa woman who grew up in Muswellbrook in New South Wales. Jennetta is passionate about the preservation and celebration of Aboriginal culture, traditions, and stories, and is a strong advocate for Aboriginal education and maintaining a strong connection to culture.
You recently announced your new ongoing role as a Multi-Platform Journalist for SBS News and NITV. How has it been so far?
I am absolutely LOVING my time with NITV so far. I will always stand proud for my Aboriginal culture and help to educate people, but it’s lovely to walk into a workplace that already has that respect and understanding of Aboriginal people.
What made you pursue a career in journalism?
The media has a lot of power. Media contributes to the stereotypes afforded to my people. I wanted to change the way Aboriginal people are portrayed in this country.
If there has been one BIG lesson in getting to the stage you’re at now, what would that be?
Don’t let your anxiety hold you back!
Don’t ever turn down opportunities because you’re scared or nervous!
ALWAYS BACK YOURSELF!!!
What advice would you give to aspiring journalists?
The first six months are the hardest!
When you’re working on a story is it common to factor in press releases as a source of information or for other uses, like building contacts?
Press Releases are a useful resource for official announcements etc. Yes, I use them often.
