Professor Oldfield is available to discuss the following topics:

  • A more holistic approach is needed to address obesity

  • Australia is getting fatter, in fact we are one of the fattest nations in the developed world.

  • The Australian Bureau of Statistics National Health Survey 2017-18 showed that two thirds (67%) of Australian adults were overweight or obese (12.5 million people), an increase from 63.4% in 2014-15.

  • The Australian Government's focus continues to be on preventative solutions which are impactful but obesity is more complex than eating less, eating better and moving more.

The following quotes can be attributed to Professor Oldfield:
“Obesity is now widely recognised as a chronic disease with major contributions from genetics and biology. A better understanding of these drivers will help reduce the stigma that is often associated with being obese or overweight, conditions that are sometimes seen as a consequence of lifestyle choices or a lack of will to eat healthier and be more active.
“We need to continue to try to find better ways to treat the millions of Australians who are overweight and obese as well as preventing our children from becoming overweight.

“As a nation we need to better integrate holistic strategies that bring together prevention, care and treatment of those living with obesity. Integral to this approach is research into the biology of obesity that will continue to fuel new and powerful treatments.”

*Monash Biomedicine Discovery Institute (BDI) has one of the greatest concentrations of researchers looking at the translation of biology into therapeutics to tackle obesity.
