“The Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris is the first of the great Gothic cathedrals of Europe. It marked an engineering breakthrough that established a pattern that other cathedrals would follow. It is still the most visited Gothic cathedral in the world today. We only realise its importance when its existence is threatened. The risk of fire was a recurring hazard in the Middle Ages. We are presently in a situation that is no different.”
