EVENT: STOP OVER-DEVELOPMENT IN MELBOURNE
Sustainable Australia Party will hold a ‘Stop Over-Development in Melbourne’ public event this Sunday October 7 in Hawthorn to discuss how we achieve better planning outcomes.
The event will include speakers Professor Michael Buxton (previously Department of Environment & Planning at RMIT University), Professor Bob Birrell (The Australian Population Research Institute), Councillor Lynette Saloumi (City of Monash) and Clifford Hayes (former Mayor at Bayside City Council).
“Melbourne is suffering from significant overdevelopment and local residents are being ignored. We need better planning to stop over-development.,” said Sustainable Australia Victorian election candidate and former Bayside City Council Mayor Clifford Hayes.
"Sustainable Australia is talking to people across of Melbourne who are sick of having ugly buildings and over-development forced on them. We are calling for better planning to stop over-development, with major planning reforms that would return real power to local communities in development decisions.
“We need corruption-free local citizen juries to determine overall development masterplans by local council area, including total dwelling number, density and height limits. This planning would also incorporate commitments to infrastructure to accompany future residential development. Importantly, local planning policies and decisions could not be overturned by state government ministers, departments or tribunals.
“To help secure better planning, the State Government should also lobby the Federal Government to lower permanent immigration back to the long-term average of 70,000 per year. We need better planning to stop overdevelopment and to protect our quality of life from developers and politicians,” added Mr Hayes. | Ends
