Prescription Drug Addiction Crisis in Australia? Hypnotherapy provides a safer alternative

Recently on SBS (Australia's Special Broadcasting Corporation) show 'The Feed' they reported on Australia's Prescription Drug Crisis.  In this show they report that 1 in 10 people prescribed pain killers in Australia is becoming addicted and that 70% of the fatal drug related overdoses in Australia in 2015 (data just released) were related to prescription meds.

This startling revelation is all the more tragic because in most cases there are alternatives to explore for pain management.  Hypnotherapy for pain management has been widely used for decades; the American Psychological Society confirm it’s efficacy in the attached article which states  “Hypno-analgesia is likely to decrease acute and chronic pain in most individuals, and to save them money in surgical procedures. Hypnotic analgesia has been used successfully in a number of interventions in many clinics, hospitals, and burn care centers, and dental offices. For acute pain, it has proven effective in interventional radiology, various surgical procedures (e.g., appendectomies, tumor excisions), the treatment of burns (dressing changes and the painful removal of dead or contaminated skin tissue), child-birth labor pain, bone marrow aspiration pain, and pain related to dental work, especially so with children. Chronic pain conditions for which hypnosis has been used successfully include, among others, headache, backache, fibromyalgia, carcinoma-related pain, temporal mandibular disorder pain, and mixed chronic pain. Hypnosis can alleviate the sensory and/or affective components of a pain experience, which may be all that is required for acute pain.

Hypnotherapy is a valid complimentary therapy that can be used as part of a holistic treatment plan outlined by specialists and GP’s. Not all GP’s in Australia are on board yet however it is becoming increasingly accepted as a viable alternative to drugs for pain management in Europe.  To give an indication of its efficacy in pain management this article refers to 70 surgeries carried out over a period of months at the Institut Curie in Paris using only local anesthetic and Hypnosis, at the Institut Curie Emannuelle Manc says “ Medical Hypnosis activates a natural modified-consciousness process that can relieve such discomfort as pain and anxiety”  This method is often used for patients who need to recover quickly e.g. mothers of young children. Hypnosis is also commonly used in Dentistry as exampled by this practice in Scotland.   This BBC report discusses the high success rates of Hypnotherapy for IBS in fact NHS guidelines in the UK allow GP’s to refer patients for Hypnotherapy covered by the NHS.

Hypnotherapy for drug addiction and withdrawal is a highly effective therapy which helps people both manage and minimize the physical symptoms of drug withdrawal as well as the psychological symptoms which are often what keep people stuck. Hypnotherapy can also help resolve any underlying cause which has contributed to the susceptibility for drug addiction e.g. depression, anxiety, perfectionism, low self-esteem and confidence,  loss of connection to social groups, loss of purpose, childhood issues or ongoing family issues.
