Medianet’s REAL Impact Score helps you identify high-impact coverage, demonstrate value to stakeholders, and shift from simply counting mentions to making mentions count.
Traditional metrics such as AVE and static reach don’t tell the full story. Medianet’s new REAL Impact Score changes that. It is a proprietary, science-backed metric that measures the actual impact of individual media mentions, helping you move from vanity figures to proven value.
How is it calculated?
REAL stands for Reach, Engagement, Authority and Leverage. Each score is calculated at the mention level using three pillars of media value:
- Outlet (Reach): The size and audience of the publication or platform.
- Article (Engagement): Social media interactions with the article.
- Author (Authority and Leverage): The prominence and influence of the journalist or commentator.
These inputs are combined through a proprietary algorithm, co-developed with global data science partner Identrics, to create a dynamic score. The higher the score, the greater the impact of that media mention.
Benefits of using the REAL Impact Score
- Credible measurement: Moves away from outdated metrics like AVE, offering a more accurate view of media impact.
- Evidence for stakeholders: Provides a science-backed way to report results to executives and boards, aligned with the AMEC Barcelona Principles 4.0.
- Actionable insights: Helps teams see which mentions and outlets delivered the most influence, shifting reporting from “counting mentions” to “making mentions count.”
- Future-ready: The algorithm will continue to evolve, incorporating new data sources and analysis methods to stay aligned with changes in media and audience behaviour.
