Interview with Jon Anderson, Sports Writer at Herald Sun

04 October, 2018

Jon Anderson

Jon Anderson is a sports journalist at the Herald Sun, with a career that dates back to 1983 at The Herald and Weekly Times. Most notably, Jon appeared in a Herald Sun segment called “At the Bar with Robbo and Ando”. Outside of his work at the paper, Jon has also shown his skills in long-form writing, having co-written and edited books on former AFL players such as Mark Jackson, Gary Ablett Senior and Brian Taylor, and has written an autobiography on former Australian cricketer Rodney Hogg.

Having spent over 35 years at the Herald Sun, what aspects of working in print media do you enjoy the most?

I still get a rush out of seeing a story appear in the actual newspaper, from the initial beginnings of the story until the time it is presented with headline and photos.

For a press release to grab your attention, what should it contain?

Not be the standard garden variety release that we get 95 per cent of the time. Aim for a point of difference, something that grabs your attention straight away.

How do you think sports journalism has influenced sports in Australia?

For over 150 years sports journalism has set the agenda for the working lives of so many Australians.

If there has been one BIG lesson during your career, what would that be?

Always be honourable.

What can attendees of the Sports Masterclass look forward to hearing from you?

Honesty about the profession, from newspapers to the vibrancy of radio, to the sycophantic world of television

Medianet is the ultimate PR platform connecting you with media contacts and outlets to get your story told.
