Shepparton’s youth unemployment second highest in the nation

Shepparton has the second highest youth unemployment rate in the country, according to the latest ABS employment data analysed by the Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union (CFMEU).

The union said the Napthine Government had failed young people of regional Victoria, with Shepparton being the hardest hit region in the State.

Its youth unemployment rate is now a shocking 25.5% - an increase from the previous quarter.

“The Napthine Government has presided over the worst unemployment levels in 12 years in Victoria,” National Secretary Michael O’Connor said.

“Premier Napthine has failed to secure the Abbott Government’s support for manufacturing in Victoria – including $25 million for SPC Ardmona.

“And he’s ripped $1.2 billion out of Victoria’s TAFE system, seeing courses cut, staff laid off and campuses at risk of closure.

“As a result there are around 10,000 fewer young people starting an apprenticeship than there were four years ago.

“It’s fair to say that the Napthine Government has been a jobs disaster for Victoria. Sadly, young people in regional Victoria – and particularly Shepparton – are hardest hit.”

Mr O’Connor said the Abbott Government was making things impossible for young jobseekers by allowing employers easier access to exploited overseas labour.

“Tony Abbott plans to expand the 457 Visa program by watering down the requirement on employers to seek locally qualified workers first.

“This has a direct impact on young people. Analysis of six months of the 457 Visa program by the CFMEU found that 55 per cent of 457 Visa approvals were for employees aged 30 and under.”
